Welcome back to The Grappler y’all,
*airhorn noises*
I’ll start by saying hi! Hello! How are you? Good? Not great? Trying to make it through another day in the psychic hell that is quarantine? Feeling overwhelmed and disappointed?
I’m with you, wherever you are. I believe in us!
When I was approached by Nina to step into this leadership position I was, frankly, scared. I am famously Not A Dramaturgy Major, so the prospect of editing a dramaturgy magazine felt gargantuan. However, as Nina and I continued to discuss our dreams for what The Grappler might be, it became clear that we both believe that dramaturgy means more than academic discourse. Dramaturgy is a practice based in the community and calling ourselves a “dramaturgy magazine” felt a little too on-the-nose.
So, it’s my honor and joy to share this vision: The Grappler as a TTS Community Journal, a place where everyone in our community can gather to share, converse, and respond to the world within our building and beyond.
Here are some things I hope for the future of this intrepid magazine:
I hope you feel free to share your opinions, dramaturgical or otherwise.
I hope that everyone who chooses to write for or share their art with us feels empowered by that choice.
I hope that we can give ourselves permission to have fun while thinking critically.
I hope that one day when it is safe to do so, we can gather in community.
We’re opening this new chapter of The Grappler with an old favorite, our annual Season Response. Reading the brilliant thoughts of our writers as they react to what’s on the table for TTS in 2021/22 has been a joy. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
That’s all for now. Sending you love, joy, and warmth in this frigid, never-ending Chicago winter.
